Outdoor living

A multi-purpose garden with connected zones

The dream

Our clients were midst lovingly renovating their stunning Georgian property when we met.  They were keen to reflect the quality finish they were painstakingly achieving inside their home across their five-acre outside space.

They dreamed of having a number of distinct garden areas to enhance the understated elegance of their much-loved house. It was vitally important to make the most of the beautiful country setting.

Our insight

Working in close collaboration with our clients, we quickly identified the potential for three separate – but closely connected – garden zones that answered their lifestyle needs.

Firstly, a rundown two-acre walled garden with neglected pool would become a contemporary family and entertaining space. Next, a southern terrace (that felt inconsequential in relation to its surroundings) would become a new focal point.  Finally, the Northern Garden would fulfil the family’s everyday practical requirements. The overall effect would do justice to the beauty of the house and Chess Valley landscape beyond.

The transformation

This ambitious design and landscaping programme transformed a vast outside space into cherished outdoor havens, each of which enhance the elegance of our clients’ stunning home.

Works included the installation of a large swimming pool and pool house, traditional greenhouse, pergola and bold lighting scheme.  In addition, we undertook the renovation of a large Georgian wall, all terracing, brickwork and five acres of planting.

Along the Southern elevation, deep terracing was created that felt more in keeping with the scale of the property.  Importantly, this new focal point gives the family sweeping views of the valley during the day and glorious sunsets in the evening.

Connecting the new zones of the garden was a priority, so the terraced area has been carefully designed to draw the eye through newly installed iron gates into the inviting walled garden beyond.

The previously imposing walled garden, dominated by its high perimeters, has been landscaped sensitively with steps and terraces.  This has created an inviting pool area, outdoor lounge and dining space. The introduction of an oak pergola, delicate cherry trees and raised steel borders with abundant planting in lush greens, burnt oranges and vibrant purples give colour and interest. The Northern garden has provided the busy family with a practical area to park cars, store bins and keep tools. All are immersed in generous new borders and interesting topiary to retain the focus on the beauty around. Since completion, the scheme has been awarded a Design Award by Homes and Gardens and a national Landscaping Award by the British Association of Landscape Industries.

James and the team really listened to us and how we wanted to use our garden. We are delighted with the finished result and even though the planting is less than a year old it looks amazingly mature.  The colour palette used in the borders is stunning. We would definitely work with James and his team again on future projects.
