We all see what we do as a huge privilege. That genuine passion shines through in all of our work, enabling us to create newly imagined spaces our clients tell us are
life-enhancing and even life-changing.

James Scott FSGD, MBALI
Managing Director and Principal Designer

A Fellow of the Society of Garden Designers and a Designer Member of the British Association of Landscape Industries, James founded The Garden Company in 1991. Recognised by Pro Landscaper in 2022 as one of the Most Influential People in landscaping today, James is on the SGD and BALI adjudication panels for new designer members. He is also on the judging panel for the SGD Awards scheme and Pro Landscaper’s Project Awards.

Of his role, James says:  ‘I don’t think a day goes past without me thinking how lucky I am to do what I do. I’m a huge believer in the transformative power of nature on our lives.  Knowing that the work we do makes such a positive difference is humbling. Seeing a client’s joy at the end of a project and knowing that that will last for years to come is something I’ll never tire of.’

Garden inspiration:  My grandparent’s rambling Cotswold garden and orchard held an intoxicating promise of adventure that inspired my love of nature and gardening.  I also love the Alhambra in Andalusia for its grandeur and strikingly contemporary geometry and Sheffield Park Gardens in Sussex for its ambitious sense of scale. In particular, I love  the way in which its designer (Capability Brown) so intuitively understood how the gardens would mature long after his lifetime

Favourite plant:  Alliums are my favourite because of their delicate, ephemeral nature.  I’m also a real fan of the un-showy, subtle beauty of wood anemones

Other interests:  Cooking is similar to gardening for me – a creative way of bringing joy.  I get a similar sense of satisfaction making a delicious meal for my family as I do creating a space that will be a source of happy memories for years to come for a client.

I also love to forage for wild mushrooms. An early morning walk with our dog in the hope of finding something delicious for breakfast can be totally absorbing.

Garden inspiration

Chelsea Flower Show has been a must visit for me for as long as I can remember – the artistry and creativity on show there always leaves me buzzing with inspiration. The creative planting at RHS Wisley is another rich source of ideas.  I also love the iconic shapes, vibrant colours and innovative use of texture on display at fashion shows, all of which can translate into exciting planting schemes.

Favourite flower

The impossible question!  I love so many; although I do particularly love scented plants – honeysuckle, daffodils and all herbs, but especially, Thyme.  I’m also drawn to plants like Acers, Sedums and Geums that are deep orange or red in the Autumn – my favourite season.

Garden inspiration

I love a walled garden! I think it’s something to do with being in an enclosed space that is calm and restful.  I also associate them with fruit and vegetable patches and the wonderful sense of satisfaction and closeness with nature they can bring

Favourite flower

It’s hard to single out one favourite, but along with many other people I do have a soft spot for native bluebells.  There’s something so opulent and uplifting about seeing a carpet of blue in a wood. It has become an annual treat to visit the bluebell woods at Ashridge Estate in Hertfordshire.

Molly Kumer

Landscape Architect

With a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Molly spent her formative years as a designer in Slovenia, but fell in love with English garden design while working with renowned designer Tom Stuart-Smith.  She is a powerhouse of creativity and prides herself on getting under the skin of each client’s initial vision to turn it into a reality that feels completely personal and unique each time.

Garden inspiration

Creativity was woven into my life from the earliest beginnings, growing up in a home surrounded by art and filled with garden design, home décor and crafts magazines. Even today, I can lose hours to creative research – having a global pool of creativity only ever a click away is hugely exciting for me.

Favourite flower

I adore ferns for their texture and for the pure exuberance of life they show without relying on flowers.  With flowering plants, it was love at first sight when I came across the humble Mexican Fleabane.  It’s such a tough little plant and will squeeze into the tiniest gaps ready to surprise us with joyful clouds of daisy-like flowers in all shades of pink and white.
