Modern family living

Creating focal points for play, relaxation and entertainment

The dream

Our clients enjoyed their large garden in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, but found it disjointed and lacking an overall identity.  Their dream was for a space that did justice to the views that first drew them to the house and that could become the beating heart of family life.

Our insight

When we met with our clients we fell in love with their sunny, light filled living room with its sweeping views over the rolling Hertfordshire countryside and identified the area outside as the natural focal point of the new garden space.

Clearly zoned areas would break up the rest of the huge, slightly nondescript space to give it new flair and character.  Care was also given to creating connections between the new areas of the garden, to draw people into moving around the space.

The transformation

A new, raised and boldly contemporary terrace with swimming pool, loungers and a pool house create a luxurious new focal point for family life.  Flowing straight from their much loved sunny indoor living area and providing stunning new view points over the landscape beyond, this new terrace epitomises all that the family love about where they live.

Mediterranean planting around the terrace, including large olive trees, soft grasses and evocative lavenders create a permanent holiday feeling and contrast strikingly with the quintessentially English views beyond.

Steps from the terrace lead to a long gravelled pathway running the length of the two-acre garden. Following this snaking path draws the family, and its visitors, over a granite bridge into a tranquil Japanese garden, or along a blossom-filled avenue of Malus Evereste trees.

The formal avenue leads to a bespoke oak garden summerhouse – the perfect retreat from everyday life, with restful views over the Hertfordshire countryside and a newly created wildflower garden which attracts butterflies, bees and other pollinators.

A functional but much loved play area and vegetable patch are now carefully tucked away – close enough to the house to ensure they’re regularly used – but no longer detracting from the beauty of the spaces in the garden and beyond.

James and the team really listened to us and how we wanted to use our garden. We are delighted with the finished result and even though the planting is less than a year old it looks amazingly mature.  The colour palette used in the borders is stunning. We would definitely work with James and his team again on future projects.
