As the temperatures start dropping and the days get shorter we all start realise that winter is round the corner. Here are some jobs that will help protect your garden against the harsh winter months and as well as preparing for spring.
GRASS AND LAWN MAINTENANCE:
Start collecting autumn debris to prevent pest and diseases.
Scarify and aerate. Feed with a slow release low nitrogen fertilizer.
TREES AND SHRUBS:
Prune back tall shrubs such as Lavateras and Buddleias to about half their height, to prevent wind rock during winter.
Prune climbing roses.
Plant new perennials.
Cut down and divide older perennials to rejuvenate plants.
Plant spring bulbs.
PESTS AND DISEASES:
Remove any yellowing or dead leaves from plants to prevent spread of diseases.
Dig over empty areas of soil or spread bark mulch. This will help prevent weed growth (Mulch is a good moisture retainer too), which in turn will reduce the need for weed killer or hand weeding next season.
